Detailed Itinerary

Overview:  This mixed Tour de France tour combines both riders and non-riders - each group with a separate itinerary. Spyns Premiere tours are popular with friends or couples travelling together with one avid rider and a non-rider (or often relaxed rider). Our 8-day romp (July 16-23, 2012) through France allows riders to enjoy a daily dose of spinning while the non-riders have their own daily activities. The advantage is you always enjoy breakfast and dinner together and often the occasional lunch. In addition to seeing 5 TDF stages, including 3 Pyrenees stages, a time trial and the Paris finish, you'll experience three regions of France: the rugged Pyreneen mountains in southwest France, Bordeaux wine country, and ever so chic Paris. While on tour you'll also drink fine wine and enjoy delectable meals. If those weren't enough reasons to join the tour, your Paris hotel overlooks the finish course. Did we mention your send off dinner is at the Eiffel Tower? We've been leading Tour de France packages tours since 2003 and have learned it all comes down to geography. Take your Paris hotel for example. Why fight the crowds along the Champs Elysées when you can sleep in, open the hotel's bay windows and watch from your hotel room overlooking the race course. Magnifique. Before Paris, avid cyclists can sweat to their heart's content on famous climbs like the Col du Tourmalet and Aubisque while our non-riders hike through the Pyrenees, taste wine, learn haute cuisine in Bordeaux, and master Pétanque (France's version of bocci ball). Whether you love to ride or just love a rider, everyone joins our traditional pre-finish bike ride up the deserted Champs Elysees on race day. It's a Spyns tradition.

Day 1 (July 16) Stage 15 finish in Pau (Pyrenees): Meeting in the beautiful city of Pau, the group will enjoy an afternoon of Tour de France excitement. Spyns has arranged for a VIP room close to the finish line so you can enjoy drinks and a comfortable setting before dashing out to see the caravan, peloton, and stage 15 finish. Following the late afternoon finish, bus transfer to your hotel south of Lourdes. Time and weather permitting, the riders may head out for an early evening ride before late buffet dinner at your hotel.
Day 2 (July 17): This is a Tour de France rest day. As a mixed tour, the riders and non-riders will enjoy separate activities. Following a hearty breakfast, riders will strike out with their Spyns guides and support vans for a 68 km (42.3 mile) loop ride to conquer the famous Cols du Sulor (1474 m / 4834 ft) and d’Aubisque (1709 m / 5606 ft). These are two of the most spectacular peaks in the Pyrenees mountains. Both summits  feature in tomorrow’s stage 17. Non-riders will have an equally exciting day with optional parapenting in the morning followed by canyoning in the afternoon. A parapente jump consists of strapping into an open wing-like parachute with an instructor. The open chute then allows you and your instructor to lazily drift down to the valley below. The more terrestrial canyoning involves wearing a wetsuit, lowering yourself down a river valley, and slip-sliding your way through beautiful river valleys, gulches, and waterfalls. Both riders and non-riders will return to the hotel to a gourmet meal.
Day 3 (July 18) Stage 16 viewing on Col du Tourmalet (Pyrenees): Riders will depart with their Spyns guides and support vans for an early morning ride along the Tour de France route. With the peloton closing in along the same route, bikers will do a 60.1 km (37.3 mile) loop ride up the Col du Tourmalet to Spyns private viewing tent. Depending on road closures, riders may also have time to ride the Col d’Aspin. Non-riders will transfer by van to Spyns viewing area. Once on the mountain, we’ll have an optional guided hike before stage viewing and picnic lunch. After the stage finishes, riders will ride back to the hotel with non-riders shuttling back in our vans.
Day 4 (July 19) Stage 17 finish Peyragudes (Pyrenees): Today is all about the options. You can either choose to see the stage finish in Peyragudes or transfer directly to the next hotel in beautiful Bordeaux. Option 1 (skip the Tour de France): Late morning bus transfer to Bordeaux (3.5 hrs) with mid-route lunch stop. Early afternoon check in at your spectacular Bordeaux hotel (the Regent Grand Bordeaux) followed by late afternoon walking tour of Bordeaux. Option 2 (see the stage finish): Riders will have an early departure for a full-day century ride to the ski resort of Peyragudes (90 km / 56 miles). You will have to arrive in Peyragudes in time for the afternoon finish or risk missing it. Non-riders will transfer by Spyns van to our stage viewing area near the finish. Both riders and non-riders will have dinner in Peyragudes followed by bus transfer to Bordeaux. If you choose Option 2, you won’t likely put head to pillow until midnight so this will be a long and tiring day.
Day 5 (July 20) Bordeaux: The entire group will transfer from downtown Bordeaux to the nearby village of Saint Emilion – a UNESCO world heritage site. You will enjoy a private walking tour of the city’s underground catacombs and subterranean cathedral carved into limestone rock. After some free time to shop and explore picturesque Saint Emilion, enjoy a private wine tasting and picnic lunch at nearby Chateau Franc Mayne. Riders and non-riders can bike back on mountain bikes to Bordeaux (44.7 km / 27.7 miles) while non-riders will shuttle back in the motor coach. Riders beware that you will bike the final miles in city traffic on your way back to the hotel. Dinner at a local bistro in beautiful downtown Bordeaux.

Day 6 (July 21) Stage 19 Time Trial Chartres: The group will have another exciting day full of options so you can see the Tour de France time trial or explore Bordeaux a bit more before heading directly to Paris, the ‘city of lights’. Option 1 (skip Stage 19 time trial) Sleep in, enjoy a late leisurely breakfast, check out shortly before 12, and join a cooking class in English. Sharpen your cooking skills at the famous ‘Atelier des Chefs’ in Bordeaux. You’ll then taste your creations before afternoon train to Paris. Option 2 (see Stage 19 time trial): Hop a morning train to Paris, with connecting train to Chartres. Spend an afternoon in Chartres to see the individual time trial with full access to Spyns VIP room near the finish line. Early evening transfer back to Paris following the time trial. Please note the total travel time for Option 2 will be 6-7 hours so this will be a long and tiring day. This will be a free night for dinner.
Days 7 & 8 (July 22-23) Stage 29 Finish Paris: On race finish day, Spyns hosts its classic morning bike ride (suitable for all abilities) on the Champs Elysees. Enjoy a fat-tire spin on the Tour de France race course when downtown Paris is closed to traffic. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to bike around the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs Elysees, along the Seine and next to the Eiffel Tower. Late morning breakfast. Enjoy the finish from your balcony (overlooking the Rue de Rivoli and race course) or join us in Spyns’ VIP room for cocktails and finish viewing. Send off dinner at the Eiffel Tower’s restaurant “Le 58”. The following day you can sleep in, enjoy a late breakfast, and check out before heading to the Paris airport, train station, or your next hotel. The perfect holiday!
How we select your hotels: Before planning any of our tours, a Spyns guide always conducts a full hotel inspection. While we always meet with the hotel manager, Ryan King (Spyns President) always seeks out the hotel’s two most important employees: its porter and bartender. Porters & bartenders always tell us which rooms have squeaky floors or whether the pool is really heated. Once we’ve toured, filmed, photographed, and catalogued a hotel, we then add it to our tours. You're planning to cross an ocean for Spyns TDF trip. The least we could do is check if your room has air conditioning.

Price Rating : $$
Grande Hotel de France
33 Ave Du General Leclerc, 65260 Pierrefitte-Nestalas (Pyrenees)

Rooms :27

Our Review :A classic early 1900s-style French hotel. The owners have just finished extensive renovations while maintaining the old-world feel. Rooms are generally clean and spacious but this won't be the most glamorous nor exclusive hotel of the tour.

Pros :- Friendly staff - Perfect location along many Tour de France stages - Riders will delight in being so close to the famous cols (Aubisque, Sulor, Tourmalet and Aspin).

Cons :- Some rooms are a bit small - Walls are bit thin so there can be noise - Hotel is across the street from a factory

Hotel Regent Grand Bordeaux
Place de la Comedie Bordeaux, France 31000

Rooms :150

Our Review :Driving up to the Regent Grand is one of life's 'pinch me' moments. A grand hotel in the NY Waldorf or Park Plaza style, Bordeaux's Regent Grand opened just 3 years ago after a $200 million dollar renovation. It is a superb hotel with refreshingly little attitude.

Pros :Location: right in the heart of Bordeaux. Service: The Regent's staff are friendly, motivated, and hard-working. Rooms: Somewhat heavy in their furnishings and colours, they are comfortable with beautiful bathrooms.

Cons :Rooms can be a little dark and some of the upper floor rooms are quite small. As a luxury hotel, expect to pay through the nose for extras (minibar, bar, and room service).

Price Rating : $$$$
Hotel Regina
Place des Pyramides Paris, France 75001

Rooms :90

Our Review :A little worn, but still the best hotel in Paris to see a Tour de France finish. The Regina is a bit like a trip to Grandma's house. The curtains may be a bit frayed but it's still the most welcoming place in town. With just 90 rooms and the perfect location, along a hairpin turn right on the tour finish route, the location is unbeatable.

Pros :Location: right on the Rue de Rivoli and finish route. Service: The Regina's staff are friendly, motivated, and hard-working. Rooms: Bright, comfortable rooms, with great views (many overlooking the Eiffel Tower and TDF).

Cons :The hotel is looking its age and some rooms, while clean, could use some renovating. This hotel is also in downtown Paris so there can be street noise on the rooms facing the Place de la Pyramide.

Where should I fly?
Most of our clients will fly in and out of Paris. There are at least 4 daily high-speed trains from Paris (Gare de Lyon) to the different starting points (in Pau and Brive la Gaillarde) - depending on your tour.

How do I get to the start of the tour?

I’m an avid rider, will there be enough riding for me?
We have both riding and non-riding tours. Serious riders should join our 8-Day Pyrenees-Paris Tour as it has the most mileage (see below). For more information, please visit our All Tours page but here is a summary:

I’m an average rider, will the riding tours be too difficult for me?
You should avoid our Pyrenees to Paris premiere tour as it caters to very serious riders and doesn't offer non-riding activities. If you are an average rider, you should try our mixed Dordogne-Paris it includes light rides. For more information, please visit our All Tours page.

I don’t ride but my partner is an avid rider, will we enjoy the tour?
If you take one of our mixed tours, yes. The Pyrenees to Paris Premiere Tour and Dordogne-Paris Premiere Tour both include activities for riders and non-riders. All groups go in the same direction, see the same stages, and enjoy breakfast/dinner together. So the most you’ll be apart is normally a half day. Please visit our All Tours page for a detailed summary of the riding and non-riding activities.

What kind of bikes do you provide?
If you’re a fanatical rider, we strongly suggest you bring your own bike. If you’d like to use one of ours, we have two options: a Trek Ultra (rental included) or a Scott Carbon (rental price $150/bike). What follows are some additional details: Trek Ultra SL Aluminium bikes with alloy hubs, Alex Rims, Shimano Gears / Derailer, and Bontrager seat & stem (rental included); Scott CR1 Team Carbon Shimano 105 10V Triple 50x39x30 12x25 Mavic Askium Hubs (rental price $175/bike). If you plan to use one of our bikes, we suggest you still bring your pedals, shoes, seat and stem.

Should I bring my own bike?
If you are a serious rider (150-200 miles/week), you should bring your own bike. We strongly recommend you ship your bike to your first hotel but please note that we assume no risk/liability during shipping and transport during the tour. Please see our terms & conditions for more information. Following registration, we will send you detailed shipping instructions. Our mechanic can have your bike set up and ready before you arrive based on your specifications of course.

Why should I travel with your company?
Here are three main reasons: 1. Our prices are, on average, $1000 less than our competitors yet our TDF itineraries are by far the best. 2. We are the only company that provides a complete itinerary for non-riders and light riders traveling in the same groups. Traveling with Spyns means enjoying your holiday even if you don’t touch a bike. Don't take our word for it, look at our testimonials. We're also more than happy to provide references upon request.
